saving money on food
A couple of weeks ago, I made a post about easy ways to save money on groceries. I thought I’d do a follow up post and offer more ways to save money on food. We all have to eat, right?
1. Always make a list before you go to the grocery store. Do an inventory of your fridge and pantry and see exactly what you need. Plan your meals ahead of time and list the items needed to prepare them. You can also prioritize your list based on what you really need and what you want, so you can gauge your budget better while shopping.
2. When it comes to restaurants, choose lunch time instead of dinner. Restaurant food during lunch usually costs less than the dinner menu items. You should also find out where the local “hot spots” are because the best restaurants as rated by people will usually be those that have the best food and the best prices.
3. Buy the less expensive cuts of meat. Try to find the recipes where the cuts of meat don’t matter. This way you can avoid the more expensive cuts of meat whenever possible. This strategy ensures that you don’t scarifice taste and at the same time you can buy a larger quantity.
4. Grab the day old bread and save. Grocery stores sell the bread that was baked the day before at a lower price. The bread is still perfectly fine and safe to eat and there is nothing at all wrong with eating it. If you’ve got the space in your freezer, you can pick up a few loaves and freeze them. You can even defrost them in the microwave oven when you’re ready.
5. Be creative with left overs. Most people are tired of eating the same thing they had the night before. Leftovers can be boring, but they don’t have to be. Use the previous nights meal in a totally different way the next night. For example, if you make tacos for dinner one night you can use the taco meat to make taco salads the next.
6. Pay in cash. When you go to the store with cash in hand, it will help keep you from going over that amount because it’s a firm limit. When you use a credit or debit card, you tend to be a more flexible with your thinking about how much you can spend.
7. Bring water and snacks with you when you travel. If you get hungry or thirsty, having food and water on hand will help you to avoid having to buy it. Often times, the tourist attractions are the most expensive places to buy food, so if you can avoid doing that it’s an easy way to save.
Saving money on food doesn’t have to mean eating bad food or sacrificing taste. Consider all your options and you may surprise yourself with the new ways you find to save money.
